Find a tiling company or tiler experienced in large floor tiles

If you have opted for large, say 800mm tiles or XL 1200mm and bigger tiles you need to make sure your installer has the ability, experience, the tools to do the job and a portfolio to proove it.

XL floor tiling isnt simply a case of "just bigger tiles" or "needs two to lift", theres way more to it.

Setting out XL floor tiles

Those with experience will be able to picture the layour within a few minutes of being in your home and a taking a few measurements. The vision you have, and the reason you choose XL size tiles was the have a large almost seamless floor, and a really important part of that is where the grout lines go. Its also important to reduce waste too.

Cutting tools and techniques

Its common for XL tiles to be just 8 or 9mm thick now as manufacturers try to save on costs. This makes a 1200mm porcelain tile almost bendy, but very easy to crack. Quality blades must be used, and an inexperienced installer custs may leave you with a floor full of cracks in 6 months time.

Pre installation prep for XL tiles

You'll likely need self levelling, even on a realtively new and "flat looking" concrete screed.  You will need de-coupling matting too, especially if you have underfloor heating. If you have under floor heating, its likely the skirting boards will need to be removed to allow for expansion of the tiles when warm. Remember, the 'cheap guy' will say you wont, and wont answer his phone a few months later when the cracks appear.
