Limestone is a beautiful material to work with, and looks stunning in so many environments and property types. It works really well with underfloor heating too.

When choosing a contractor or installer for your project make sure they can demonstrate experience and pictures or references from previous limestone projects.

How we tile limestone floors

- We only use the whitest adhesive for fixing limestone. Typical cement based white adhesives are off white, and can taint the stone over time. For fixing limestone we opt to use a gel based white adhesive, which is applied to the floor using a notch trowel with each stone being entirely flat buttered with gel white too. This ensures the stone keeps its colour from any sub floor contaminates.

- All cuts are done using a wet machine, and the edges sanded where on show. If the limestone is tumbled edge, we replicate this too.

- Once laid, tiles are cleaned, allowed to dry then sealed with a high quality stone sealer. After grouting, we seal again to keep everything as stain free as possible.

- Steps in limestone are mitre cut and filled with colour match resin for strength.

Will limestone floors stain?

Sealers prevent accidential spillages from staining limestone, with acidic liquids like red wine being the worst for potential staining. That said, with 2 coats if sealer you should have plenty of time to mop up without any issues. Problems only really occur if the staining liquid or left on the stone for longer. Even then, individual stones can be replaced, or sometimes sanded down  and resealed if the stain is only on the surface.
